id Tech 5 / Doom 4 ported to Symbian OS

How long will it take until this news is reported all over the net? Think about it, Quake I, II and III have already been ported. We will just see when Doom 3 and Quake 4 get their sources released, and finally Doom 4. Symbian OS is growing and expanding its capabilities all the time, and in the future it supports quad core (or even more) processor composition, so it's very likely that these games would be playable in the future devices.

Interesting to see what the future brings to us, eh?

Sihdissä Nokia 9210(i)/ Nokia 9210(i) in sight

Nyt on sen verran hulluksi mennyt tuo kännyköiden vaihtelu että pitää vähän vaihdella lisää. Nokia 9210 tai sen i-malli on siis hankinnassa, vaikka onkin älyttömän vanha puhelinmalli. Käytin sitä joskus nuoruusvuosinani, ja haluaisin vielä kerran saada sen henkilökohtaiseksi data-avustajalaitteekseni. Oli se sen verran hyvä kännykkämalli, kun sille tehtiin sen kultavuosina raivokkaasti erilaisia ohjelmia, mm. kaksi Doom-versiotakin (Hannu Viitalan ja Wildpalmin).

Pääsen myös jatkamaan puolitoista vuotta sitten stopanneita OPL-projektejakin. OPL-ohjelmointi on hauskaa, toisin kuin C++:n. All this changing phone model too often has gone so crazy that I must practice it some more. I'm currently looking for Nokia 9210 or its i model although its a really old model. I used it in my younger years, and would like to get it to act as my personal data assistant once more. It was such a good phone model because in its golden years it got made all these wonderful applications, and even two Doom versions (Hannu Viitala's and Wildpalm's).

I can also continue my OPL projects which ended some year and a half ago. OPL programming is fun, unlike C++. Oh yes, C++ reminds me the fact that in Hannu Viitala's site there is the SDL release for Nokia 9210 which actually works (unlike Nokia 9300's and 9500's or 7710's versions).

Laboratorioalan perustutkinto

Olen sitä mieltä, että laborantin ammattinimikkeeseen valmistavaan tutkintoon ei todellakaan kannata eksyä. Itseäni hieman sapettaa kun ei työtä löydy kovasta etsinnästä huolimatta. Olen nyt ollut yli vuoden ilman minkäänlaista kosketusta laboratorioympäristöön, ja alkaa vieroitusoireetkin tulla pintaan viikko viikolta. Hikoilua, pahaa oloa, vapisua ja keittiökaapin puhdistusainepullojen ainesosaselosteiden intensiivistä tutkiskelua (tulee luonnokas olo kun näkee hieman kemikaalien nimiä).

Mutta tosiaan, jos haluat varman työpaikan, mene sähköasentajalinjalle tai metallimieheksi, mutta laborantin tutkinto kannattaa jättää väliin. Työllisyystilanne on mahdottoman huono tällä hetkellä, eikä se näytä helpottavan lainkaan. Ja kun vuoden on ollut laboratoriottomassa ympäristössä, niin alkaahan siinä unohtaa joitain asioita pakostakin, eli jos pääsee työhaastatteluun, niin alkaahan haastattelijakin katsella vähän sillä silmällä, että mahtaakohan olla kannattavaa palkata noin kauan laborariottomana ollut henkilö yritykseen.

ZTC 8898/ NOKLA E90 review

The first touch

The ZTC 8898 (or ZhongTian 8898) mobile phone was delivered to me in a completely black box, which didn't have any text on it. The box is very stylish and it has the same spirit as this phone. There was no manual present inside the box, but it was shipped along with a USB cable, a charger, earphones and a NOKLA E90 tape tag.

The phone turns on by the pressing of the End button, and it has to be pressed at least 3 second before the phone goes on. If the user just pushes the button quickly, a white screen flashes on the screen and the phone goes off.

After inputting the PIN code, the Nokia Hands animation shows up onto the screen, but instead of NOKIA it reads NCKIA.




Looks (outer cover)

At least the front cover of the ZTC 8898 has been copied from the Nokia E90. Its size is a little different though; the length is 11,7 cm, the width 6,0 and the height 2,1 cm, while Nokia E90 is sized 13,2 x 5,7 x 2,0 cm. The weight is 185 g, while Nokia E90's 210 g.



8898 is sturdy, dark-colored phone model. The front cover has a frame with a mirror surface, and mirror-surfaced is also the whole battery cover. The phone's hinges look very durable, and the whole outer cover is remarkably firm. The covers are unchangeable in this model, so the user must be satisfied only to the ones which are selected by the manufacturer.






Under the phone's biggish battery (8,3 x 4,3 x 0,5 cm) there can be found a product code label, which reads "NOKLA E90", written with a big font. Next to it there is a memory card and a SIM card slot. Unfortunately around these slots there is the phone's circuit board showing.






The outer cover's display is a touch screen, whose resolution is 240 x 320 pixels a.k.a. QVGA, and the color depth is 262 144. Underneath it there are small touch areas which can be used to select the wanted app: menu, messaging, personal assistant, phone directory or the number input screen.



Above the display there is the camera and the outer cover's ear speaker. In the bottom of the phone there is a port for the USB cable. The connector type of the 8898 isn't very common at least in Europe because its breadth is 1,0 cm and the flatness 2 mm.



The outer cover's backside includes a hole for the touch pen a.k.a. the stylus. The stylus is of rather good quality, because it shrinks like a telescope when it's put into its hole. It's pretty heavy to pull out and put in, but that's on purpose because when it's pulled out, it extends and accordingly shrinks when it's put back in.








Looks (inner cover)

When the phone is opened to be used in the inner screen mode, its hinges bounce the covers apart from each other very fast and with power. The covers' position can be either opened or closed; it can't be held in the middle in any way.



The phone's inner display is 320 x 240 pixels, just like the outer cover's, but it doesn't have the small touch areas in the bottom. That's because it isn't a touch screen. Instead, it's controlled by the inner side's numerous buttons. The button meanings can be found in the later part of this review.

On the inner screen's both sides there are loudspeakers that play audio back quite well. I didn't expect this good sound quality from a phone like this.



The keyboard is a full QWERTY, and it has Windows and Internet Explorer buttons which however aren't linked to Windows in any way. As a bad side I could mention that the keyboard doesn't have the backspace button at all.




The software and the operating system

The ZTC 8898 hosts a proprietary, closed operating system, which means that the user can't install any application onto it. It's presumably the same kind of OS as in the CECT branded phones. This model has no kind of mention about who or which party has made the OS. It just is.

The outer screen's main screen (starting screen) shows the next calendar entry, the background image, the clock, the operator and the lowest part contains the date and the weekday. The calendar entry goes onto the end of the inner screen if it's long.

I'll tell about a few noteworthy application in the next part.

The black list can be used to set numbers that aren't wanted to get calls from.

With the dictionary the user can translate English words into Chinese. The Chinese translation is in kanjis though, so it's compulsory to learn them if the user wants to use this feature.

The calendar is rather simple, and it got stuck two times, freezing the whole phone, in which case the battery had to be pulled off. I noticed later that while browsing with the stylus it didn't freeze at all, only when the browsing was done with the buttons.

The camera is only a VGA camera (or even QVGA), which has a few adjustments: the image quality, size, self-timer, camera sound, color effects (black & white, sepia or negative), mode (normal or night, although both produce identical quality), saving location (the phone memory or the memory card) and autosave (on or off). The camera also has 2x digital zoom.

The MP4 player plays videos back very well; at least the videos that came with the device (resolution 320 x 240 pixels) are played back nicely. More of this in the later part.

The MP3 player is pretty lightweight, but the playback is fine. The player can be set to play in the background if the user wants.

The file management utility includes only options related to handling of the files (e.g. "Delete"), so for example the contents of the videos and images can't be modified.

The games include Tetris, Minesweeper (these aren't unfortunately available in the inner screen mode) and a NES emulator. In the outer screen the user can change the game's direction from horizontal to vertical and vice versa just by tapping the screen once. The games also have sound.

The NES emulator is playable, although the phone's low-on-resources type of processor runs the games pretty sluggishly. It doesn't have a save/ load capability at all. It only runs games and has fixed key mappings.

The E-Book program is used to read e-books, which in this case, are pure text files with the extension .txt. Still there are a lot of options in this application: the user can e.g. adjust the program's background and foreground (the cursor bar which travels in the rows on top of the text) colors. Also the program can be set to automatically move the text forward; also the movement speed can be adjusted and whether the program moves a row or a page at a time.

In the inner screen mode there are some programs and options cut down because presumably ZTC hasn't troubled to make 320 x 240 pixel versions of them. For example, calculator, alarm, Tetris and Minesweeper are not selectable in the inner screen. In addition to that, some options like the E-Book program's options have been left to the outer screen mode, thus rendering them visually impractical.


Text message writing

This certainly needs a topic of its own because there's so much to mention about. The text message writing must be practiced by users who use the Latin alphabet, because when entering the text message program, there is the kanji recognition mode in use. The text message window has small icons below, and the user must select (press) the one with the text "en" in it. When the big letters are needed, this icon must be pressed again. Then the stylus can be used to draw a letter onto the text message window, and the phone recognizes it. The user can tap the phone icon in the left bottom at will when he/ she wants a small on-screen keyboard to appear. In this mode the "en" icon can be tapped to change between big and small letters.

The text message writing with the outer cover's buttons is done in the "Ab" mode when the predictive text input is off. This mode can be obtained by pressing three times the "en" icon after arriving to the text message program.

The period mark can be obtained from the icon which has the period and comma marks. This icon brings a pop-up window onto the screen, which has other special characters, although the Euro character is missing (the dollar and yen characters are there though).

By tapping the "123" icon the user can quickly input numbers into the text message field with the outer cover's keyboard.

The inner side's messaging capability isn't so great as one would think. Namely, on this side the user has to turn the character set into Latin alphabet, and the Shift button doesn't work in the "en" or "EN" mode, but the mode must be set to "Ab" (it requires four times the pressing of the Ctrl key after arriving to the text message program). Even then the Shift button only works as the swapper between big and small letters, so it functions like the Caps Lock key of a PC keyboard. The period character can be selected from the special character pop-up window which appears onto the screen after pressing the Alt button.




The button meanings

Outer cover
This photo shows which button I'll be covering in the text.



The left select button (1)
In the main screen this button results in keypad locking when pressed for a few second or so. When pressed only once, the main menu comes up. In the menus and programs there reads a word, e.g. "Select" in the left bottom of the screen, and it can be selected with this button.

The right select button (2)
In the main screen it opens the phone book. Inside the menus and programs in the right bottom part of the screen it reads a word, e.g. "Back", and this button is used to select that.

The application button (3)
Opens the WAP browser.

The C button (4)
Works as the back button inside the menus and in the text message and other writing applications it's the backspace button.

The send button (5)
In the main screen this button leads the user to the call records, and when a call comes, this button answers it.

The end button (6)
Turns the phone off when pressed for a long time, and ends the call during it.

The up button (7)
In the main screen it takes the user to the file management utility, and in the menus it works as the up button.

The right button (8)
In the main screen it opens the camera application, and in the menus it works as the right button.

The down button (9)
In the main screen it opens the MP3 player application, and works as the down button in the menus.

The left button (10)
In the main screen it opens the text messaging application, and in the menus is works as the left button.

The OK button (11)
In the main screen it opens the games menu, and in the menus it works as the selection key (just like the left selection button).

The number keypad (12)
They open the phone number input screen.

Inner cover



The send button (1)
Functions the same way as in the outer cover.

The end button (2)
Functions the same way as in the outer cover.

The up button (3)
Functions the same way as in the outer cover.

The right button (4)
Functions the same way as in the outer cover.

The number and character keypad (10)
In the main screen only pressing the number buttons takes the user to the phone number input screen. Pressing the letter buttons or the Ctrl, Shift, Alt, Enter, Space or the window button leads to nowhere from the main screen.

When writing a message it's good to know some buttons' functions. A list of noteworthy buttons follow.

- Alt pops up a special character window onto the screen.
- The window button works as another F button.
- Space works as it should.
- Ctrl changes the character set from kanjis to "en" mode and to numbers.
- Shift works as the character size changer. The mode must then be "Ab". Actually its name would be Caps Lock better, because its function is the same as PC's Caps Lock.


The MP4 and the MP3 player
The letters W, D, Z and A form an optional direction pad in the inner cover, and this is why the W and Z buttons are used as volume control keys when watching videos and listening to music.

In the MP4 and MP3 players the user can rewind the video or music forward easily by pressing the right or left buttons in the real direction pad.

The video settings are in the link below. In order to convert videos onto the device, the user will need to download the SUPER converter. The videos which fill the whole screen run with 20 fps well, when the bitrate is about 300-400 kbps.

I watched a full 1 h 30 min long film on this device with the settings above, and for my astonishment, there was no lagging or fronting with the audio. The quality was also very good; there was no pixelation or artifacts except in a few shots in the movie, and they were only in the dark areas. I'm very pleased with the video quality.

As a curiosity I'll tell that when I tried to convert videos with VirtualDub for this device and opened them on the phone's inner side, it just popped up a notice window which stated that the format isn't supported. After this the device changed its resolution into 240 x 320 pixels (earlier 320 x 240 pixels), so the inner screen tried to display the outer screen on it.

The camera
The device only has one camera, and that's only in the outer cover's front side. If the user wants to take photos in the outer cover mode, the phone has to be turned away from oneself and the photo must be taken blindfold. While using the inner screen the camera works well though, and it's designed for using on the inner screen. Below there is a photo taken with the ZTC 8898's camera. The image quality is simply horrible. The phone's software interpolates (enlarges it with some smoothing) the image from that 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 pixel resolution, and this results in a complete disaster. Connections
This phone has a USB slot, and after it's connected to the PC it asks whether the USB disk mode is used or the PC camera mode. The USB mode creates two disks onto the computer, which both can be browsed and modified at will. The other is the phone memory and the other is the TransFlash memory card.

The PC camera works like a webcam. At first the user has to set things up though - in the phone memory there is a folder called "pc camera", whose contents must be copied onto the PC. The folder contains the AMCap program, and it can also be found on the Internet. When the copying is ready, the device must be connected again to the USB port, and this time the "PC Camera" mode must be selected. When Windows asks where the camera program is located, the user has to enter the folder's name into the field where the AMCap program is located. Soon the computer recognizes the device as a camera, and the user can start the AMCap program.

The program shows only a white screen at first, so the selection "Preview" must be checked first from the "Options" menu. Then the photo starts to show.

Data transfer

The ZTC 8898 supports only GPRS, so it doesn't have a support for HSDPA, UMTS or Wi-Fi at all. One could almost expect the latter ones from this kind of professional-looking device, but they do show off with their absence. With the GPRS connection the user can browse the WAP and receive/ send MMS messages.

The headset
A headset is shipped along with this device, and they're connected to the same slot as the USB cable. The headphones' sound quality isn't so wonderful however, so one should search or ask if another headset or an adapter for this kind of connection slot was available somewhere in the world.

The summary
This phone is very stylish and advanced-looking, but still it has a quality inside that would never be seen in a Nokia phone. There are occasional misspellings in the software (e.g. the menu items' first letters are small), and the inner screen's user inteface seems like it was made in about three and a half minutes.

I'd still give this phone points for a good try and especially for the price. I will surely be bying more CECT or ZTC phone products in the future because there's something different and exotic about them. The media playback properties are good, and also playing games is fine.

If one is not after diversity and he/ she wants a stylish phone, then here it is. CECT and ZTC are making new models all the time, and the selection is wide.

Other observations

This phone can't be used to view Microsoft Word or Excel files, and it doesn't have a SNES amulator, although the specifications might say that.

Like in most Nokia phones, the phone works without a SIM card. When it's not in the phone and the user goes into the number input screen (e.g. by pressing the screen once in the main screen), the number 112 (the Finnish 911) is already in the number field.

ZTC 8898:n/ NOKLA E90:n arvostelu

ZTC 8898 toimitettiin minulle kokomustassa laatikossa, jossa ei lukenut mitään. Laatikko on mielestäni erittäin tyylikäs ja se sopii tälle puhelimelle. Ohjekirjaa ei ollut laatikossa, vaan mukana tuli USB-kaapeli, laturi, korvakuulokkeet ja NOKLA E90 -teippilappu.

Puhelimen päälle laittaminen tapahtui Lopeta-napista, ja sitä täytyi painaa vähintään 3 sekuntia ennen kuin puhelin lähti käyntiin. Jos nappia vain napsauttaa, valkoinen ruutu välähtää näytöllä ja puhelin sammuu.

Sen jälkeen, kun PIN-koodin on syöttänyt laitteeseen, tulee Nokian Kädet-animaatio ruudulle, mutta NOKIA-tekstin tilalla tulee NCKIA.




Ulkonäkö (ulkopuoli)

ZTC 8898:n ulkonäöstä ainakin etukuori on selvästi Nokia E90:ltä kopioitu. Sen koko on kuitenkin hitusen pienempi; pituus on 11,7 cm, leveys 6,0 ja korkeus 2,1 cm, kun taas Nokia E90:n 13,2 x 5,7 x 2,0 cm. Paino on 185 g, kun taas Nokia E90:n 210 g.



8898 on jykevä, väriltään tumma puhelinmalli. Etukuoressa on peilipintainen kehikko, ja peilipintainen on myös koko akun kansi. Puhelimen saranat näyttävät todella pitäviltä, ja koko ulkokuori on erittäin vankan oloinen. Kuoria ei tässä mallissa pysty vaihtamaan toisiin, eli käyttäjän pitää tyytyä tehtaan valitsemiin.





Puhelimen suurehkon akun (8,3 x 4,3 x 0,5 cm) alta löytyy tuotteen koodilappu, jossa lukee suurella "NOKLA E90". Sen vieressä on muisti- ja SIM-korttipaikka. Näiden ympäriltä paistaa valitettavasti puhelimen piirilevy.






Ulkokuoren näyttö on kosketusnäyttö, jonka resoluutio on 240 x 320 pikseliä eli QVGA, ja värisyvyys on 262 144. Sen alapuolella on pienet kosketusalueet, joista voi valita joko menun, tekstiviestit, apuohjelmat, puhelinluettelon tai numeronnäppäilytilan.



Näytön yläpuolella on puhelukaiutin ja kamera. Puhelimen pohjassa on portti USB-johdolle. 8898:n käyttämä liitinmalli ei ole kovin yleinen ainakaan Euroopassa, sillä sen leveys on 1,0 cm ja litteys 2 mm.



Ulkokuoren takaosassa on lovi kosketinkynälle eli stylukselle. Stylus on astetta laadukkaampaa tekoa, sillä se menee teleskooppimaisesti kokoon, kun se laitetaan loveensa. Se on melko raskas vetää pois ja laittaa takaisin loveensa. Se on tarkoituskin, sillä silloin, kun se vedetään ulos, se pitenee varrestaan ja vastaavasti pienenee, kun se laitetaan takaisin.








Ulkonäkö (sisäpuoli)

Puhelinta avattaessa sisänäytön tilaan sen saranat ponnauttavat kuoret erilleen toisistaan todella nopeasti ja voimalla, melkein liian kovaa. Kuoren asento voi olla vain joko kiinni tai auki; välimaastossa sitä ei millään saa pidettyä auki.



Puhelimen sisänäyttö on ulkonäytön tavoin 320 x 240 pikselin kokoinen, mutta siinä ei ole lainkaan pieniä kosketusnappuloita. Se ei nimittäin ole kosketusnäyttö. Sen sijaan sitä ohjataan sisäkuoren monilla näppäimillä. Näppäinten merkityksiä on jäljempänä.

Sisänäytön molemmilla puolilla on kaiuttimet, jotka toistavat melko hyvin ääntä. En olisi odottanut niin hyvää äänentoistoa tällaiselta puhelimelta.



Näppäimistö on täysi QWERTY, mutta kiinalaisena laitteena siinä ei kuitenkaan ole suomalaisille aina tärkeitä ääkkösiä. Siinä on Windows- ja Internet Explorer -kuvakkeen omaavat näppäimet, jotka eivät kuitenkaan liity mitenkään Windowsiin. Huonona puolena voisi mainita, että näppäimistössä ei ole lainkaan backspace-nappia.




Ohjelmisto ja käyttöjärjestelmä

ZTC 8898:ssa on suljettu käyttöjärjestelmä, joka tarkoittaa sitä, että siihen ei pysty asentamaan lisäohjelmia lainkaan. Se lienee samanlainen kuin CECT-merkkisissä puhelimissa. Tässä mallissa ei ole minkäänlaista mainintaa siitä, kuka tai mikä taho on tehnyt käyttöjärjestelmän. Se vain on.

Ulkonäytön pääruudussa eli aloitusruudussa näkyy seuraava kalenterimerkintä, taustakuva, kello, palveluntarjoajan nimi ja alimmaisena on päivämäärä ja viikonpäivä. Kalenterimerkintä menee ruudun äärilaitaan sisänäytöllä, jos se on pitkä.

Kerron muutamasta huomion arvoisesta ohjelmasta seuraavassa.

Mustan listan avulla voi asettaa puhelimeen numeroita, joista ei toivo saavan viestejä tai puheluita.

Sanakirjan avulla voi kääntää englanninkielisiä sanoja kiinaksi. Kiinalainen käännös on tosin kanjeina, joten niiden opettelu lienee pakollista, jos haluaa käyttää tätä ominaisuutta.

Kalenteri on melko yksinkertainen, ja se jumittui itselläni kaksi kertaa jämähdyttäen koko puhelimen toiminnan siihen paikkaan, jolloin akku täytyi ottaa pois puhelimesta. Huomasin myöhemmin, että kosketinkynällä selattaessa se ei jämähtänyt lainkaan, vaan pelkästään näppäimillä selattaessa.

Kamera on tavallinen VGA-kamera (tai jopa QVGA), jossa on muutamia säätöjä: kuvan laatu, koko, ajastettu kuvaus, kameran ääni, väriefekti (mustavalkoinen, seepia tai negatiivi), tila (normaali tai yötila, vaikka molemmat saavat aikaan samanlaisen kuvan), tallennuspaikka (puhelimen muisti tai muistikortti) ja automaattinen tallennus (päälle tai pois). Puhelimessa on myös 2x digitaalinen zoom.

MP4-soitin toistaa hyvin videoita; ainakin puhelimen mukana tulleet videot, joiden resoluutio on 320 x 240 pikseliä, toistuvat hyvälaatuisina laitteessa.

MP3-soitin on melko heppoinen ominaisuuksiltaan, mutta toisto on hyvä. Soittimen voi asettaa taustalle soimaan, jos haluaa.

Tiedostoselaimen sisäiset hallintavalinnat sisältävät vain tiedoston käsittelyn levyllä (esim. "Poista"), joten esim. videoiden tai kuvien sisältöä ei voi muokata.

Pelit sisältävät Tetriksen, Miinaharavan (näitä ei tosin ole sisänäytön tilassa valittavana) sekä NES-emulaattorin. Ulkonäytössä pystyy vaihtamaan pelin suuntaa vaakasuuntaisesta pystysuuntaiseen helposti koskettamalla näyttöä mistä tahansa kohtaa. Peleissä on myös ääni.

NES-emulaattori on pelattava, vaikka puhelimen pienitehoinen prosessori pyörittääkin pelejä hieman verkkaisesti. Siinä ei ole tallennus-/ latausmahdollisuutta lainkaan. Se vain pyörittää pelejä, ja näppäimet ovat sijoiteltu muuttamattomasti.

E-Book-ohjelmassa voi lukea E-Bookeja, jotka tässä tapauksessa ovat puhtaita tekstitiedostoja, joiden pääte on .txt. Silti tämän ohjelman lisäasetukset ovat kattavat; käyttäjä voi mm. säätää ohjelman tausta- ja etuvärin (tekstin päällä kulkeva osoitin). Lisäksi ohjelman voi laittaa itse kulkemaan tekstitiedostossa; myös kulkemisen nopeutta voi säätää ja sitä, mennäänkö rivi vai sivu kerrallaan.

Sisänäytön tilassa on muutamia valintoja ja ohjelmia karsittu pois, sillä oletettavasti ZTC ei ole vaivautunut tekemään niistä 320 x 240 pikselin versioita. Esimerkiksi laskin, hälytys, Tetris ja Miinaharava eivät ole sisänäytössä valittavana. Lisäksi jotkut valinnat, esim. E-Bookin asetukset, ovat jääneet ulkonäytön tilaan, ja ne toteutuvat huonosti sisänäytöllä.


Tekstiviestien kirjoitus

Tämä vaatii oman aiheensa, sillä on niin paljon mainittavaa. Tekstiviestien kirjoitusta tarvitsee ainakin latinalaisia aakkosia käyttävien henkilöiden harjoitella, sillä tekstiviestien kirjoitustilaan mentäessä on kiinalaisten kanjien tunnistustila käytössä. Tekstiviesti-ikkunan alapuolella on pieniä näppäimiä näytöllä, joista täytyy valita "en"-kuvake. Isoja kirjaimia halutessa tätä kuvaketta täytyy koskettaa toisen kerran. Tällöin tekstiviestiruudulle voi kirjoittaa kosketinkynällä kirjaimen, ja puhelin tunnistaa sen. Käyttäjä voi halutessaan koskettaa puhelinkuvaketta, joka on vasemmassa alakulmassa, saadakseen pienen näppäimistön ruudulle. Tässäkin tilassa voi koskettaa "en"-kuvaketta, jos haluaa suuret tai pienet kirjaimet.

Tekstiviestien kirjoitus ulkokuoren näppäimillä tapahtuu "Ab"-tilassa, jolloin englanninkielinen ennustava tekstinsyöttö on kytkettynä pois päältä. Tämän tilan saa klikkaamalla kolme kertaa "en"-kuvaketta tekstiviestitilaan tultaessa.

Pistemerkin saa kuvakkeesta, jossa on pisteen ja pilkun kuva. Tämä kuvake tuo ruudulle ikkunan, jossa on muutkin erikoismerkit, vaikka Euro-merkki puuttuukin.

"123"-kuvaketta napsauttamalla voi nopeasti kirjoittaa numeroita ruudulle ulkokuoren näppäimistöllä ilman suurempia kikkailuja.

Sisäpuolen viestittelyominaisuus ei ole niin ruusuilla tanssimista kuin luulisi. Tälläkin puolella nimittäin täytyy aluksi säätää kirjaimisto länsimaiseksi, ja Shift-näppäin ei toimi "en"- tai "EN"-tilassa, vaan tilana täytyy olla "Ab" (vaatii 4 kertaa Ctrl:n painalluksen tekstiviestiohjelman aloituksesta). Silloinkin Shift-nappi toimii isojen ja pienten kirjainten vaihtajana, eli toiminto on sama kuin tietokoneella Caps Lock -napilla. Pisteen saa sisänäytöllä valittua erikoismerkkivalikosta, joka tulee Alt-napin painalluksella.

Vasen valintanäppäin (1)
Pääruudussa kauan painettaessa tämä näppäin saa aikaan näppäinlukon ja siitäpoistumisen. Yhden kerran painettaessa se vie menuun. Valikoissa ja ohjelmissa ruudun alaosassa lukee vasemmalla puolella jokin valinta, esim. "Select", ja tämä näppäin vastaa sitä valintaa.

Oikea valintanäppäin (2)
Pääruudussa se aukaisee puhelinluettelon. Valikoissa ja ohjelmissa ruudun alapuolella lukee oikealla puolella jokin valinta, esim. "Back", ja tämä näppäin vastaa sitä valintaa.

Sovellusnappi (3)
Avaa WAP-selaimen.

C-nappi (4)
Toimii valikoissa takaisin-nappina ja tekstiviesti- ja muussa näppäilysovelluksessa backspace-nappina.

Vastaa-nappi (5)
Pääruudussa painettaessa tämä nappi vie puhelutietoihin, ja puhelun tullessa se vastaa puheluun.

Lopeta-nappi (6)
Sulkee puhelimen kauan aikaa painettuna, ja puhelun aikana lopettaa puhelun.

Ylös-nappi (7)
Vie pääruudussa tiedostoselaimeen ja toimii valikoissa ylös-nappina.

Oikea-nappi (8)
Pääruudussa painettaessa avaa kameraohjelman ja valikoissa toimii oikea-nappina.

Alas-nappi (9)
Pääruudussa painettaessa avaa MP3-soittimen ja valikoissa se toimii alas-nappina.

Vasen-nappi (10)
Pääruudussa se avaa viestinkirjoitusikkunan ja valikoissa se toimii vasen-nappina.

OK-nappi (11)
Pääruudussa se avaa pelivalikon ja valikoissa se toimii valitsijana (vasemman valintanäppäimen tavoin).

Avaavat numeronnäppäilyikkunan.

Numero- ja kirjainnäppäimet (10)
Pääruudussa vain numeronäppäinten painallus vie puhelimen numeronäppäilytilaan. Kirjaimia tai Ctrl-, Shift-, Alt-, Enter-, Space- tai ikkunanappia painettaessa pääruudussa ei tapahdu mitään.

Viestiä kirjoittaessa on hyvä tietää muutaman näppäimen funktio. Seuraavassa onkin lista näistä näppäimistä.

- Alt aukaisee erikoismerkkilistan ruudulle.
- Ikkunanäppäin toimii F-kirjaimena.
- Space toimii kuten pitääkin.
- Ctrl vaihtaa kirjoitustilan kanjeista "en"-tilaan tai numeroihin.
- Shift toimii kirjainkoon vaihtajana. Tilan täytyy tällöin olla "Ab". Oikeasti sen nimen pitäisi olla Caps Lock, koska sen toiminto on sama kuin tietokoneen Caps Lock.


MP4- ja MP3-soitin
Kirjaimet W, D, Z ja A muodostavat suuntanäppäimistön sisäpuolella, ja tämän vuoksi W:tä ja Z:aa käytetään äänenvoimakkuuden säätöön videoita katsellessa ja musiikkia kuunneltaessa.

MP4- ja MP3-soittimissa voi kelata videota tai musiikkia eteenpäin helposti painamalla oikeaa tai vasenta suuntanäppäintä oikeasta suuntanäppäimistöstä. Sama pätee myös MP3-soittimeen.

Videoiden asetukset ovat kerrottu alla olevassa linkissä. Tarvitset niiden muuntamiseen SUPER-nimisen muuntajan. Koko näytön kokoiset videot pyörivät n. 20 kuvan sekuntinopeudella hyvin, bittinopeuden ollessa n. 300-400 kbps.

SUPER-asetukset

(lopuksi painettaessa Encode-nappia tulee kysely, johon tulee vastata XVID eli alimmainen valinta)

Katsoin n. 1 h 30 min pitkän elokuvan tällä laitteella yllä olevilla asetuksilla, eikä ihmetyksekseni ääni tullut missään vaiheessa videon perässä tai mennyt sen edellä. Laatukin oli todella hyvä; pikselöitymistä tai artifakteja ei ollut kuin muutamassa kohdassa elokuvaa, ja nekin tummissa alueissa. Olen hyvin tyytyväinen videoiden laatuun.

Kuriositeettina kerrottakoon, että kokeilin muuntaa VirtualDub-ohjelmalla itselleni videon tälle laitteelle, mutta kun avasin sen sisänäytöllä, niin laite ilmoitti, että formaatti ei ole tuettu. Tämän jälkeen sisänäyttö otti ja vaihtoi resoluutionsa 240 x 320 pikseliin (ennen siis 320 x 240 pikseliä), eli sisänäyttö yritti näyttää ulkonäyttöä itsessään.

Kamera
Laitteessa on vain yksi kamera, ja sekin on ulkokuoren etuosassa. Jos ulkokuoren tilassa haluaa jotakin kuvata, on käännettävä puhelin pois päin itsestä ja otettava sokkona kuva. Sisänäytön tilassa kamera kuitenkin toimii yllättävän hyvin, ja siihen se on suunniteltukin. Alla on yksi kuva, joka on otettu ZTC 8898:n kameralla. Kuvanlaatu on yksinkertaisesti hirveä. Puhelimen ohjelmisto interpoloi (suurentaa sitä samalla hieman tasoittaen) kuvan siitä oikeasta QVGA- tai VGA-kokoisesta resoluutiosta, ja tämä johtaa täydelliseen katastrofiin. Yhdistettävyys
Tässä puhelimessa on USB-paikka, ja yhdistettyään PC:iin se kysyy, käytetäänkö USB-tilaa vai PC-kameratilaa. USB-tila luo tietokoneelle kaksi levyä, joita voi selailla tai muokata halutessa. Toinen on puhelimen muisti ja toinen TransFlash-muistikortti.

PC-kamera toimii webkameran tavoin. Aluksi täytyy hieman säätää tosin - puhelimen muistissa on kansiossa "pc camera" tiedostot, jotka täytyy kopioida tietokoneelle. Ohjelman nimi on AMCap, ja se löytyy myös internetistä. Kun kopiointi on valmis, täytyy laite laittaa uudelleen USB-porttiin ja valita tällä kertaa "PC Camera". Kun Windows kysyy, mistä haetaan ohjelmaa, täytyy valinnaksi antaa se kansio, jossa AMCap-tiedosto sijaitsee. Pian tietokone tunnistaakin laitteen kameraksi, ja AMCap-ohjelma voidaan käynnistää.

Ohjelmassa näkyy aluksi vain valkoista, joten Options-valikosta täytyy painaa Preview-valintaa. Tällöin kuva alkaa näkyä.

Tiedonsiirto

ZTC 8898 tukee vain GPRS-yhteyttä, eli siinä ei ole HSDPA-, UMTS- tai Wi-Fi-tukea lainkaan. Näin ammattimaisen näköiseltä laitteelta melkein odottaisi jälkimmäisiä, mutta ne loistavat poissaolollaan. GPRS:n avulla voi selata WAP:ia ja vastaanottaa/ lähettää MMS-viestejä.

Kuulokkeet
Tämän puhelimen mukana tulee kuulokkeet, jotka kytketään samaan paikkaan kuin USB-kaapelikin. Kuulokkeiden äänenlaatu ei ole kovin hyvä kuitenkaan, joten kannattaa etsiä tai kysellä, josko tällaiseen liittimeen meneviä kuulokkeita tai adaptereita olisi jossain päin maailmaa kaupan.

Yhteenveto
Tämä puhelin on hyvin tyylikäs ja edistyneen näköinen, mutta se on kuitenkin sisältä sellaista, että suomalaisissa Nokioissa tällaista laatua ei tulla koskaan näkemään, eikä olla nähtykään. Vähän väliä tulee kirjoitusvirheitä (valikoiden alkukirjainten nimi pienellä + yhdyssanavirheet) vastaan, ja sisänäytön käyttöliittymä näyttää olevan tehty kolmessa ja puolessa minuutissa.

Kuitenkin antaisin tälle laitteelle pisteitä yrityksestä ja varsinkin hinnasta. Tulen varmasti ostamaan muitakin ZTC- tai CECT-merkkisiä puhelimia, sillä näissä on jotain sellaista eksoottisuutta ja erilaisuutta. Mediantoisto-ominaisuudet ovat hyvät, ja myös pelaaminen onnistuu.

Jos ei ole kovinkaan monipuolisuuden perään ja haluaa tyylikkään puhelimen, niin tässä sellainen olisi. CECT ja ZTC tekevät muutenkin koko ajan lisää puhelimia, ja valikoimaa riittää.

Muita huomioita

Tässä puhelimessa ei pysty katselemaan Microsoft Word- tai Excel-tiedostoja, eikä tässä ole SNES-emulaattoria, vaikka spekseissä lukisikin niin.

Niin kuin useimmissa Nokian malleissa, puhelin toimii ilman SIM-korttia. Kun sitä ei ole puhelimessa ja käyttäjä menee numeronäppäilytilaan (esim. painamalla pääruudussa näyttöä kerran), on numero 112 valmiina näppäiltynä numerokentässä.
