id Tech 5 / Doom 4 ported to Symbian OS

How long will it take until this news is reported all over the net? Think about it, Quake I, II and III have already been ported. We will just see when Doom 3 and Quake 4 get their sources released, and finally Doom 4. Symbian OS is growing and expanding its capabilities all the time, and in the future it supports quad core (or even more) processor composition, so it's very likely that these games would be playable in the future devices.

Interesting to see what the future brings to us, eh?

Nokia N800

Heh, päätökseni horjuvat puolelta toiselle kuin lipputangot syysmyrskyssä. Ensin ajattelin ostaa Nokia N93:n, sitten E90:n ja nyt olen tullut siihen päätökseen, että jos en ostaisikaan Symbian-pohjaista kännykkää, vaan siirtyisin Linux-laitteiden käyttäjäksi. Eli Nokia N800 ja siihen lisäksi puhelu- ja SMS-tarkoituksiin Nokian peruskännykkä 5110 tai vähän kehittyneempi 5510, jotka kummatkin omistan. Minusta Nokia N800:n tekniset tiedot ja hinta näyttävät niin hyviltä, että olisi melkein hullua ostaa sen sijaan Nokia E90, jossa saattaa vielä olla näytön naarmuuntumis- ja rasvoittumisongelmakin. Se ei olisi mukavaa puhelimessa, jonka OVH on tuhannen euron paikkeilla.

Nokia N800 kiinnostaa hyvien videonkatselu-, internet- ja pelimahdollisuuksiensa puolesta. Näyttö on 800 x 480 pikseliä, prosessorin taajuus saadaan uuden Maemo OS2008:n avulla kellotettua 400 MHz:iin, ja Youtuben videotkin toimii tässä uudessa käyttöjärjestelmässä lukemani perusteella niin kuin sen pitääkin eli pehmeästi. Doomia ja Quakea pystyy pelaamaan siististi ja kaikenlaista hyötyohjelmaakin löytyy tälle koneelle. Ja miksei sitä äkkiä vääntäisi itsekin jonkinlaista ohjelmaa äkkiä tolle, kun tarve tulee?

Joka tapauksessa erittäin siisti laite on kyseessä ja täytyy tarkkaan miettiä, josko tuon sitten ostaisi, kun on rahaa (vakiolauseeni, (c) Sami Vuori 2007-2008).

Ajattelin tätä ennen ostaa ZTC ZT8380 -mallia olevan puhelimen, joka on erittäin hienon ja teknisen näköinen ja suhteellisen kehittynyt kiinalaiseksi "halpapuhelinmalliksi". Alle 180 €:lla saisin tilattua sen tänne Suomeen, jos tulliinjäämisriskiä ei oteta huomioon (silloinhan tulee lisäksi ALV 22 % + tullivero 3,5 % paketin arvosta), mutta silti aika huono malli: Kysyin Sourcinggaten asiakaspalvelulta tuon kännykän GPS:stä ja sieltä ilmoitettiin että valitettavasti GPS on hyödytön täällä Suomessa, koska puhelimesta ei löydy karttaa tänne.

Katselin myös Nokia E90 -kopiota, mutta se ei kyllä kiinnosta paljoa, kun molemmat näytöt ovat samankokoiset (320 x 240 pikseliä), ja lisäohjelmiakaan ei pysty oletettavasti asentamaan tuohon kännykkään.


Heh, my decisions wobble from one side to another like flagpoles in an autumn storm. At first I thought I'd buy Nokia N93, then E90 and now I have come to a decision, that I wouldn't buy a Symbian based phone, but transferred into Linux devices. So Nokia N800 and in addition to that I'd use for phone and SMS purposes Nokia 5110 or 5510, which I'm an owner of both. I think Nokia N800's technical specifications and price look so good that it would almost be madness to buy instead a Nokia E90, which could even have the screen scratching and smudging problem. It wouldn't be so nice in a phone, which has an SRP of about a thousand euros.

Nokia N800 interests me because of its good video viewing, internet and gaming possibilities. The screen is of 800 x 480 pixels resolution, the processor's frequency can be clocked up to 400 MHz with the new Maemo OS2008, and from what I've read, Youtube's videos work as they should, cleanly that is. Doom and Quake can be played decently and every kind of utility programs can be found for this device. And why not quickly code myself some kind of program for this apparatus, when the need hits?

In every way it's a very neat device and I have to think carefully, if I'd buy it when I have enough money (the basic phrase, (c) Sami Vuori 2007-2008).

Before this I wondered if I should buy ZTC ZT8380 branded phone, which is looks very cool and technical and is relatively developed for being a "Chinese cheapie." For under 180 € I could order it right here to Finland, if the risk of being caught in the customs isn't taken into observation (because then comes the 22 % VAT and customs taxes of 3,5 % of the overall product's price), but the device is still somewhat bad: I asked about the GPS property from Sourcinggate's customer service and they said that unfortunately the GPS is useless here in Finland because the phone doesn't have maps for this country.

I also looked at the Nokia E90 rip off, but it doesn't interest me much, when both screens are equally sized (320 x 240 pixels), and extra applications can't assumably be installed onto the phone.

Hyvää kannattaa odottaa/ Good things are worth waiting for

Nokia E90 on ollut myynnissä Suomessa 12.6. lähtien. Nyt on neljä ja puoli kuukautta kulunut sen ensimmäisestä liikkeellelaskusta, ja nyt asiat vasta alkavat näyttää hyvältä. Tänään Nokia julkisti eurooppalaisiin laitteisiin uuden ohjelmistoversion (07.40.1.2), ja tässä versiossa vasta GPS:iin tuli AGPS eli Assisted GPS. Nyt GPS pääsee vasta kunnolla oikeuksiinsa. Lisäksi tässä versiossa on FPU-tuki (Floating Point Unit) otettu käyttöön, joten hinkan porttaama Quake 1 pystyy ottamaan kaiken irti Nokia E90:stä. Nokia on kaiketi saanut korjattua myös E90:n ulkokuoren viat eli näytön naarmuuntumisen ja likaantumisen.

Itselläni on sellainen periaate, että en osta mitään puhelinmallia julkaisuaikana, vaan odotan vähintään kolme kuukautta, että mallista tulee kunnon tarkasteluraportit ja käyttäjäkommentit internetiin. Tähän on kolme syytä:
- Valmistaja on saanut palautetta ostajilta ja on kehittänyt vähintään yhden uuden ohjelmistoversion ja se korjaa mahdolliset tuoteviat, niin kuin E90:n tapauksessa
- Softa on rikkaampaa, kun ohjelmoijat ovat ehtineet kääntää ohjelmansa uudelle puhelimelle
- Hinta alenee ja Huuto.netistä ja Matkapuhelinfoorumilta saa mallia parin sadan alennuksella

Nokia E90 menee hankintaan, jos sen hinta alenee 300-400 €:n paikkeille ja siihen on varaa.


Nokia E90 has been in sales in Finland from 12th of June. Now it has been four and a half months since its first launch, and not until now the things are looking good. Today Nokia published a new firmware version (07.40.1.2), and in this version for the first time the GPS got AGPS (Assisted GPS). Now the GPS gets its justice properly. This version also has the FPU (Floating Point Unit) support enabled, so the Quake 1, which is ported by hinkka, is able to get everything out of Nokia E90. Presumably Nokia has fixed also E90's exterior related faults, that is the scratching and smudging of the inner screen.

I have a principle that I don't buy any phone model at its launching time, but wait for at least three months so the model gets proper reviews and user comments onto the internet. There is three reasons for this:
- The manufacturer has got feedback from the buyers and has developed at least one new firmware and it corrects the possible product defects, as in the case of E90
- Software is richer when the programmers have had time to translate their programs onto the new phone model
- The price gets lower and the model is available on Huuto.net and Matkapuhelinfoorumi for some few hundred euros' discount

Nokia E90 gets purchased, if its price gets lowered to 300 to 400 euros and when I can afford it.

Quake 1 portattu S60 v3.1:lle/ Quake 1 ported onto S60 v3.1

Suomalainen hinkka-nimimerkillä (myös ohinkka) Internetissä tavattava ohjelmoija on portannut Quake 1:n Symbian S60 3rd FP 1:lle. Ainoa, mikä ei toimi, on verkkopelaaminen. Peli toimii täydellisesti Nokia N95:llä.

Tulee ylpeä olo kun ajattelee, että suomalaiset ovat tuoneet Symbian-alustalle CDoomin (Hannu Viitala) ja C2Doomin(Markus Mertama) ja nyt vielä Quakenkin.


A Finnish programmer named hinkka, who can be met on the Internet, has ported Quake 1 onto Symbian S60 3rd FP1. The only thing, that doesn't work, is the netplay. The game works perfectly on Nokia N95.

I feel proud, when I think that Finnish people have brought CDoom (Hannu Viitala) and C2Doom (Markus Mertama) and now also Quake onto the Symbian operating system.
