Kun olin jonkin aikaa lueskellut Nokia N800:n käyttäjäkommentteja ja arvosteluja, päätin ottaa selvää Linux-käyttöjärjestelmästä. Totesin, että sitä kannattaa aikakin kokeilla, ja varsinkin sen vuoksi, että Windows XP rullaa tässä tietokoneessa (500 MHz, 320 MB RAM) aivan liian hitaasti. En ainakaan menettäisi mitään.
Päätin valita Ubuntun (7.10, Gutsy Gibbon) jakeluversioksi. Se osoittautuikin todella hyväksi valinnaksi, koska nyt tietokoneen käyttö on todellakin nopeutunut huomattavasti. Tietokoneessa on vielä hieman liian vähän muistia, koska Operan ollessa päällä (monta välilehteä samaan aikaan) on vapaata muistia noin 10 megatavua. Mutta emolevylleni saa laajennettua muistia 3 x 256 MB:n verran eli 768 MB:iin, joten siihen tähdätään. Jos sinulla on myytävänä PC100-yhteensopivia 256 MB:n kokoisia DIMM-muisteja halvalla, niin olisin kiinnostunut :)
Linux on kyllä erikoinen järjestelmä, ja olen todella vaikuttunut Lisää/poista-ohjelmasta. Siellä on massiivinen lista ohjelmista, jotka sopivat tähän jakeluversioon ja riittää, kun rastitat listasta haluamasi ohjelmat ja sitten ohjelma asentaa ne järjestelmään. Lisäksi Pääte-sovellus (Windowsin Komentoriviä muistuttava ohjelma) on todella hieno, koska siinä on C- ja C++-kääntäjä integroituna ja kirjastoja (esim. SDL) voi lisätä haluamansa mukaan.
Olen todella tyytyväinen Windows XP:stä Linuxiin siirtymiseen. Vielä täällä on toinen (tai oikeastaan kaksikin) kone, jossa on Windows XP, eli XP:n ominaisuuksia tarvittaessa ei tarvitse asentaa uudelleen sitä tähän tietokoneeseen.
When I had some hours read Nokia N800's user comments and reviews, I decided to read some information about Linux operating system. I discovered that I should give it at least a try, and especially for the reason that Windows XP runs just too slow on this computer (500 MHz, 320 MB RAM). At least I wouldn't lose anything.
I determined to single out Ubuntu (7.10, Gutsy Gibbon) as the distribution. It showed to be a very good choice, because now using the computer has become noticeably faster than before. There's still a bit too little memory, because when Opera is on (many tabs at the same time), the amount of free memory is about 10 MB. But my motherboard can hold up to 3 x 256 MB amount of memory, so I'm aiming at 768 MB of RAM. If you have PC100-compatible 256 MB -sized DIMM memory modules for sale, I'd be interested :)
Linux sure is a extraordinary system, and I am very impressed by the Add/remove program. There's a massive list of applications that are compatible with this distribution and it's enough to check the boxes of desired programs. Then the application installs them onto the system. In addition to that, the Terminal-application (equivalent to Windows' Command line) is very neat, because there's an integrated C and C++ compiler and one can add libraries (e.g. SDL) into it when the person wants.
I'm most satisfied for the transference from Windows XP to Linux. Yet here is another computer (actually two), where there is Windows XP, so when I need XP:s properties, I don't have to reinstall it onto this computer.

Nokia N800
Heh, päätökseni horjuvat puolelta toiselle kuin lipputangot syysmyrskyssä. Ensin ajattelin ostaa Nokia N93:n, sitten E90:n ja nyt olen tullut siihen päätökseen, että jos en ostaisikaan Symbian-pohjaista kännykkää, vaan siirtyisin Linux-laitteiden käyttäjäksi. Eli Nokia N800 ja siihen lisäksi puhelu- ja SMS-tarkoituksiin Nokian peruskännykkä 5110 tai vähän kehittyneempi 5510, jotka kummatkin omistan. Minusta Nokia N800:n tekniset tiedot ja hinta näyttävät niin hyviltä, että olisi melkein hullua ostaa sen sijaan Nokia E90, jossa saattaa vielä olla näytön naarmuuntumis- ja rasvoittumisongelmakin. Se ei olisi mukavaa puhelimessa, jonka OVH on tuhannen euron paikkeilla.

Katselin myös Nokia E90 -kopiota, mutta se ei kyllä kiinnosta paljoa, kun molemmat näytöt ovat samankokoiset (320 x 240 pikseliä), ja lisäohjelmiakaan ei pysty oletettavasti asentamaan tuohon kännykkään.

At first I thought I'd buy Nokia N93, then E90 and now I have come to a decision, that I wouldn't buy a Symbian based phone, but transferred into Linux devices. So Nokia N800 and in addition to that I'd use for phone and SMS purposes Nokia 5110 or 5510, which I'm an owner of both. I think Nokia N800's technical specifications and price look so good that it would almost be madness to buy instead a Nokia E90, which could even have the screen scratching and smudging problem. It wouldn't be so nice in a phone, which has an SRP of about a thousand euros.
Nokia N800 interests me because of its good video viewing, internet and gaming possibilities. The screen is of 800 x 480 pixels resolution, the processor's frequency can be clocked up to 400 MHz with the new Maemo OS2008, and from what I've read, Youtube's videos work as they should, cleanly that is. Doom and Quake can be played decently and every kind of utility programs can be found for this device. And why not quickly code myself some kind of program for this apparatus, when the need hits?
In every way it's a very neat device and I have to think carefully, if I'd buy it when I have enough money (the basic phrase, (c) Sami Vuori 2007-2008).

For under 180 € I could order it right here to Finland, if the risk of being caught in the customs isn't taken into observation (because then comes the 22 % VAT and customs taxes of 3,5 % of the overall product's price), but the device is still somewhat bad: I asked about the GPS property from Sourcinggate's customer service and they said that unfortunately the GPS is useless here in Finland because the phone doesn't have maps for this country.
I also looked at the Nokia E90 rip off, but it doesn't interest me much, when both screens are equally sized (320 x 240 pixels), and extra applications can't assumably be installed onto the phone.

Nokia E90:n SDK kansalle!/ Nokia E90's SDK for the people!
Mielialani nousi tavallista korkeammalle, kun My-Symbian.com-foorumin jäsen bigc raportoi uutisen, jossa kerrottiin, että Nokia E90:n SDK:ta saadakseen ei enää tarvitse ottaa osaa Forum Nokia S60 API Partnering Programiin, vaan nyt se on kaikelle kansalle ladattavissa Forum Nokian sivulta. Samalla sivulla on myös muita E-sarjan API:ja, ja nekin täysin maksutta ladattavissa. Parhain ohjelmointiin ja ohjelmien kehittämiseen liittyvä uutinen OpenC-pluginin jälkeen omasta mielestäni. Hienoa, Nokia!

On the same page there is also other E-series APIs, and they are also there just waiting to be downloaded with no kind of payments needed. I think this is the best news concerning programming and application development after the OpenC plugin. Bravo, Nokia!

Hyvää kannattaa odottaa/ Good things are worth waiting for
Nokia E90 on ollut myynnissä Suomessa 12.6. lähtien. Nyt on neljä ja puoli kuukautta kulunut sen ensimmäisestä liikkeellelaskusta, ja nyt asiat vasta alkavat näyttää hyvältä. Tänään Nokia julkisti eurooppalaisiin laitteisiin uuden ohjelmistoversion (07.40.1.2), ja tässä versiossa vasta GPS:iin tuli AGPS eli Assisted GPS. Nyt GPS pääsee vasta kunnolla oikeuksiinsa. Lisäksi tässä versiossa on FPU-tuki (Floating Point Unit) otettu käyttöön, joten hinkan porttaama Quake 1 pystyy ottamaan kaiken irti Nokia E90:stä. Nokia on kaiketi saanut korjattua myös E90:n ulkokuoren viat eli näytön naarmuuntumisen ja likaantumisen.
Itselläni on sellainen periaate, että en osta mitään puhelinmallia julkaisuaikana, vaan odotan vähintään kolme kuukautta, että mallista tulee kunnon tarkasteluraportit ja käyttäjäkommentit internetiin. Tähän on kolme syytä:
- Valmistaja on saanut palautetta ostajilta ja on kehittänyt vähintään yhden uuden ohjelmistoversion ja se korjaa mahdolliset tuoteviat, niin kuin E90:n tapauksessa
- Softa on rikkaampaa, kun ohjelmoijat ovat ehtineet kääntää ohjelmansa uudelle puhelimelle
- Hinta alenee ja Huuto.netistä ja Matkapuhelinfoorumilta saa mallia parin sadan alennuksella

Today Nokia published a new firmware version (07.40.1.2), and in this version for the first time the GPS got AGPS (Assisted GPS). Now the GPS gets its justice properly. This version also has the FPU (Floating Point Unit) support enabled, so the Quake 1, which is ported by hinkka, is able to get everything out of Nokia E90. Presumably Nokia has fixed also E90's exterior related faults, that is the scratching and smudging of the inner screen.
I have a principle that I don't buy any phone model at its launching time, but wait for at least three months so the model gets proper reviews and user comments onto the internet. There is three reasons for this:
- The manufacturer has got feedback from the buyers and has developed at least one new firmware and it corrects the possible product defects, as in the case of E90
- Software is richer when the programmers have had time to translate their programs onto the new phone model
- The price gets lower and the model is available on Huuto.net and Matkapuhelinfoorumi for some few hundred euros' discount
Nokia E90 gets purchased, if its price gets lowered to 300 to 400 euros and when I can afford it.

Canonin tiukat ruuvit/ The tight screws of Canon
Hankin Huuto.netistä vähän aikaa sitten Canon PowerShot A520 -mallisen kameran 10 €:lla. Juju oli siinä, että kamera oli viallinen, koska sitä käynnistettäessä objektiivi ei liikkunut ja näyttöön tuli virheilmoitus E18 eli Error 18. Ajattelin, että osaisin korjata kameran internetissä olevien lukuisten ohjeiden avustuksella, mutta toisin kävi. Yritin viimeisenä temppuna avata kameran ja tarkistaa objektiivin sisäosan, jotta näkisin, olisiko sinne juuttunut hiekkaa tai pölyä tai muuten vain objektiivi olisi luistanut paikaltaan.
Kuulostaa simppeliltä ja nopealta toimenpiteeltä, mutta niin kuin olin ounastellut, tuli tämä olemaan erittäin vaikeaa. Ensinnäkään en saanut ulkokuoren ruuveista yhtä avattua lainkaan, koska se oli niin tiukasti kiinni, ja minun piti sahata sen ympäriltä hieman kuoren muovia pois. Toinenkin tällainen tilanne tuli, kun olin päässyt yhden kerroksen sisemmäs kameraan. Nyt kaikkien ruuvimeisselieni päät olivat kuluneet pieniksi piikeiksi, joten minun täytyi lähteä 100 km:n päähän Turkuun hakemaan vanhemmiltani uutta ruuvimeisseliä. Sain tämän ruuvimeisselin avulla monta ruuvia auki, mutta eräät ruuvit eivät auenneet, enkä enää jaksanut temppuilla tämän kameran kanssa. Annoin sen isoveljelleni korjattavaksi, koska hän korjaa kameroita työkseen ja varmasti osaa sen korjata ja saa ruuvit auki jollain hienolla superruuvarilla.
Canon ja sen järjettömän tiukat ruuvit... Laitoin jopa ruuvimeisselin pakastimeen noin puoleksi tunniksi ja tällä tavalla yritin kutistaa ruuveja lämpölaajenemisen - tai tässä tapauksessa lämpösupistumisen - avulla. Ehkä ei olisi pitänyt ostaa kameraa ollenkaan.
A while ago I got myself a Canon PowerShot A520 camera model from Huuto.net for 10 €. The catch was that the camera was defective, because when starting up the objective didn't move and an E18 (Error 18) error message popped onto the screen. I thought I could fix the camera by following the numerous how-to instructions on the internet, but other happened. As a last gimmick I tried to dismantle the camera and check the objective's inner part so I could see if there was sand or dust stuck in there or otherwise if the objective had been slided from its place.
It sounds simple and quick procedure, but as I had expected, this turned out to be very difficult. First of all, I failed to unscrew one of the cover's screws because it was so tightly in its place, and I had to cut the plastic from around it. Another situation like this turned up when I had reached one inner layer inside the camera. Now all my screw drivers' tips were worn into small spikes, so I had to travel 100 km (one way) to get a new screw driver from my parents' place in Turku. I got many screws open with this screw driver, but some screws just didn't get unscrewed, and I didn't have strenght enough to play tricks with this camera anymore. I gave it to my big brother to fix because he fixes cameras for living and he can surely fix it and gets the screws open with some fancy super screw driver.
Canon and its irrationally tight screws... I even put the screw driver in the freezer for some half an hour and this way tried to shrink the screws with the help of thermal expansion - or in this case - thermal contraction. Maybe I should have not bought the camera in the first place.

90 % 9210:stä myyty/ 90% of the 9210 has been sold
Aiemmin blogikommentissani kerroin eläkkeelle jääneestä Nokia 9210:stäni ja siitä, että voisin myydä sen osina Huuto.netissä. Päätin tehdä myös niin ja onnistuihan se - ja sain enemmän rahaa kuin odotinkaan. Tieturin näyttö ostettiin 16 €:lla ja kaikki loput, paitsi saranalliset näytön ja sisänäppäimistön raamiosat, ostettiin 9 €:lla. Vielä nuo saranaosat ovat myymättä, mutta erään ostajan pitäisi olla tulossa hakemaan ne joku päivä. 25 € on melko hyvin; tuosta olisi kokonaisena saanut ehkä jotain 10-15 euroa Huuto.netissä.

Earlier in a blog entry I told about my retired Nokia 9210 and about the fact that I could sell it in parts on Huuto.net. I decided to do that and it worked - and I got more money than I thought. The inner display was bought for 16 € and all the rest, except the frame parts of the display and keyboard with hinges, was bought for 9 €. Those hinged parts are yet to be sold, but one buyer should be coming to get those some day. 25 € is pretty good; probably I would have got about 10 to 15 euros for the whole phone on Huuto.net.
Selling in parts requires a Torx screw driver, skill and technique. I myself know Nokia 9210 thoroughly , and nothing turned out problematic while disassembling the phone. Taking off the inner LCD was the only thing I hadn't done before, but luckily it wasn't very hard.
